Twenty four major political and military leaders of Nazi Germany, put on trial for aggressive war, war crimes, and crimes against humanity were brought to a trial before the International Military Tribunal. More than 100 additional defendants, representing many sectors of German Society, were tried before the US Nuremberg Military Tribunals. It was held from November 21, 1945 to October 1, 1946. On October 1, this judgement was read: 12 of the defendants were sentenced to death, 3 sentenced to life imprisonment, 4 given prison sentences ranging from 10-20 years, and 3 were acquitted.
